Terence Hikawai - Cheap Kai!
Terence Hikawai is the founder of Cheap Kai! - an intuitive grocery shopping list app that shows the lowest priced grocery items and their locations, bringing like-minded shoppers together.
Terence developed the idea for Cheap Kai at the Start-up Weekend PASIFIKA, 2017, while studying at Victoria University of Wellington. Struggling to make ends meet on his weekly grocery shopping, he was inspired to create a platform that shows up-to-date information on the cheapest items on his shopping list. On his experience of doing the ten-day workshop Terence loved the ‘whanua feel’ of the course and saw it as a refreshing boost to keep working on the business. ‘I went in with the [idea] What is the new thing I am going to learn. I was surprised at how much I didn’t know.’ We encourage our nationwide (700plus) Alumni of entrepreneurs to network and connect, with the wider business community. Terence followed the advice and applied for the Good Food Boost mentoring program. Food Boost is a free mentoring program designed to give good food businesses (in Wellington) a boost through support and guidance from leading mentors and industry experts. We are pleased to share that Terence Hikawai is one of the four winners of the 2020 Good Food Boost program! The success of Cheap Kai underlines why having the right and continued support system and networks are so crucial for the resilience and success of start-ups and small businesses in New Zealand.
